STORIES

While gathering research material in rural Ecuador for a biography on the founders of the Nor Occident I met with local leaders.  During our meetings many topics of local interest were discussed but the overwhelming message was  “please help us to help our children”.  These words came from local teachers that want to deliver a better level of education, but for them it is impossible due to economic resources and the lack of professional assistance.  This caused me to restructure my priorities.  I placed an immediate call through a diplomatic channel that contributed by making connections to the heads of universities and institutions.  After discussing the needs of rural educators they agreed to offer the services of highly skilled training staff and set up a program of accreditation and certification.

VOICES

I have seen people coming and going promising to help us, but they never returned.  I lived with my mother up in the mountains until I was 7 years old, I was born when she was 14 years old, she couldn't afford my education, the schools were too far. I was sent to the nearest town to work as a domestic help, one year has passed and I haven't seen my mom. I collect pencils hoping that one day I'll learn to draw, I wish to go back home...

Rosita is one of many children hopping to go back home and go to school.
